Causes of the American Revolution

(Declaration of Independence)

25 Minutes

Students will learn the causes of the American Revolution with a Timeline activity – Road to the Revolution 

They will understand how all these causes lead to the Declaration of Independence.

Students will then put a mystery puzzle together with a black light. When the puzzles are complete, read the message together. It is the introduction part of the Declaration of Independence. Instructor will explain that the first section of the Declaration of Independence, the introduction, explains the document’s purpose: to declare the reasons why the American colonies are separating from Great Britain.

Road to Victory - Battle Map

25 Minutes

Students will learn the importance of the major battles in the American revolution:

Battles of Lexington and Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown through an interactive map activity.

Lexington – Shot Heard Around the World

Saratoga – Turning Point, Allies Joined

Yorktown – Last battle, British Surrendered

Students will decorate a flag for American Victory! They can decorate it with something they learned about the American Revolution.

Escape: The American Revolution

25 Minutes

Students will explore 7 Challenges that help review the main concepts of the American Revolution. Each Challenge is titled after a key event in the American Revolution. 

Students will work together towards a common goal, communicating effectively, and delegating roles within their group so all members are successful.

Colonial Life
Loyalist vs. Patriots

25 Minutes

Farm tour to target how families used to use their land for different  things – Barn, Commissary, Blacksmith, Wash House, Well, Inside of house (Changes from colonial times to now)

End it with a Loyalist Vs. Patriots lesson.

The above rotations cover SS4H1 (explain the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution).
