HistoryAlive – The Vietnam War speaker Jim Torbert

Join us for Dunwoody Preservation Trust’s next HistoryAlive program on Saturday, July 20th when we focus on the Vietnam War. Our host speaker will be Jim Torbert. He will share his experiences and photos from his tour of duty as a helicopter pilot.
Jim was born and grew up in St. Louis, MO. He left for Ft. Worth, TX to attend TCU on a full athletic scholarship to play basketball. While at TCU he was enrolled in the Army ROTC program and obtained his pilots certification in fixed wing aircraft. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant upon his graduation and was assigned to his first duty assignment at Fort Eustis, Virginia. After completing Rotor Wing flight training at Fort Wolters, TX and advanced flight training at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA he was again assigned to Ft. Eustis for maintenance and test pilot school. He served in the Viet Nam War from Nov/68 to Nov/69 where he flew for the 281st Assault Helicopter Company. Their mission was flight support for the 5th Special Forces Group, Recondo Training School, and Project Delta. The 281st has been recognized by the Special Forces as the first Special Operations Flight Company in the US Army. He completed his required military service at Ft. Bragg, NC. He retired after a successful career in wireless telecommunication with Northern Telecom. He has been married to his wife Marilyn for 46 years and they have 3 children and 8 grandchildren.
