The Dunwoody Homeowners Association

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association, Inc. is a non-profit Georgia corporation and is governed by an appointed Board of Directors (24-32 members) and an elected Executive Committee (4-6 members). The officers typically consist of a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Members of the Board are homeowners in Fulton and DeKalb counties who reside in the Dunwoody area (as such area is defined below). The Board is comprised entirely of volunteers, with the exception of a paid, part-time administrator.

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association is comprised of dues paying homeowners who reside in the Dunwoody area. Members typically share a common interest in ensuring that Dunwoody retains its largely residential character. This often entails opposing changes that would adversely impact residential property values, including undesirable development, signage, road widenings, traffic and similar such phenomenon.

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association is widely regarded as one of the most powerful associations of its kind in the metropolitan Atlanta area. It traces its origins back to 1969-70, when large scale residential development in Dunwoody was just beginning. The DHA Board meets the first Sunday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the North DeKalb Cultural Arts Center (adjacent to the Dunwoody library), and hosts its Annual Meeting, which is open to the public, on the last Sunday in January at the Dunwoody High School cafeteria.

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association includes all homes and condominiums situated in those parts of DeKalb and Fulton counties that are: North of I-285; East of Ga-400; South of the Chattahoochee River and West of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The Dunwoody Homeowners Association maintains an office at the Farmhouse (a/k/a the Dunwoody Town Hall) located at 5455 Chamblee-Dunwoody Rd. at the corner of Mt. Vernon and Chamblee-Dunwoody Roads. Office hours are typically 9:00 am 3:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Homeowners join the DHA because the DHA has consistently fought to protect their interests. There is safety in numbers. The more members the DHA has, the greater influence it has at keeping undesirable developments out of Dunwoody. There was a time in the recent past when the DHA could prevent undesirable development from coming to Dunwoody simply by threatening an economic boycott of the proposed enterprise. Most recently, the DHA has relied on other means (adherence to the land use plan, precedent, negotiation, contractual agreement, good will, legal means, etc.) to ensure that undesirable development is kept out of Dunwoody. While the number of single family detached houses in the Dunwoody area has grown significantly in recent years, membership in the DHA has remained relatively constant at approximately 1,000 dues paying households. Historically, the Dunwoody Homeowners Association has consisted entirely of volunteers who freely gave of their time and talents to preserve and enhance the area known as Dunwoody. However, as Dunwoody has grown, so too have the challenges and demands placed on the Homeowners Association traffic, congestion, sidewalks, Brook Run, MARTA expansion, etc. In an effort to lend continuity and be more responsive to the community, the Homeowners Association recently hired a part-time administrator to assist with record keeping, correspondence, mailings, member solicitation, and timely responses to homeowners’ telephone, e-mail and letter inquiries. One objective of the present administration is to raise awareness of the DHA’s value to the community in hopes of significantly increasing the membership to an amount that is more representative of the number of homeowners that now reside in our area.
